What Are Metal Braces?

Metal braces are the most traditional and widely used orthodontic treatment for correcting misaligned teeth and bite issues. They are made from high-grade stainless steel and consist of three main parts:

  • Brackets: Small square-shaped pieces bonded to the teeth.

  • Archwire: A metal wire that connects the brackets and applies continuous pressure to guide teeth into place.

  • Elastic bands (ligatures): Tiny rubber bands that hold the archwire in place on the brackets.

Benefits of Metal Braces

  1. Highly Effective – Suitable for even severe misalignments.

  2. Durable – Stainless steel brackets rarely break.

  3. Cost-Effective – Usually the least expensive orthodontic option.

  4. Customizable – Patients can choose colored bands for a personalized look.

Drawbacks

  • More noticeable compared to ceramic or invisible aligners.

  • Can cause temporary discomfort and mouth irritation.

  • Require strict oral hygiene to prevent food from getting stuck.

Care & Maintenance

  • Brush after every meal and floss daily with special orthodontic tools.

  • Avoid sticky, hard, or chewy foods (like gum, popcorn, or nuts).

  • Regular orthodontic check-ups for adjustments every 4–8 weeks.
